RentEngine built the first full-access MCP in property management and your leasing data now syncs directly with your AI tools. The RentEngine MCP is a secure connection between your RentEngine account and tools like Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code, and Claude Code. Once it is connected, you can ask questions in plain English and have the assistant read your data and take action for you.

The MCP extends the RentEngine API, which is already free and open, giving property managers who like to build their own workflows, systems, and dashboards one more way to connect to their data. Everything runs within your account's permissions, so the AI tool can only see and do what you can.

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting AI assistants to real software. In practice, it means you stop clicking through screens to find an answer and start asking for it directly.

For example:

  • "Which prospect was the last to visit 1125 Woodrow?"

  • "Does this application meet my requirements?"

  • "Put this unit on hold."

The assistant then does the work against your live account.

Here's how to connect it, and a few examples of how you can use it.

How to set up the RentEngine MCP

You will set this up once, from the Developer Portal.

  1. In RentEngine, open the Developer Portal and go to the AI Agent MCP tab.

  2. Choose your assistant from the Connect an AI assistant dropdown: Claude, Cursor, VS Code, ChatGPT, or Claude Code.

  3. Copy the Server URL (https://app.rentengine.io/mcp) and your OAuth Client ID.

  4. In your assistant, follow the steps to add a custom connector or plugin, paste the Server URL, choose OAuth, paste the Client ID, and leave the secret blank.

  5. Sign in to RentEngine and click Allow access.

In Claude, you add the connector from Settings > Connectors. In ChatGPT, enable developer mode if it asks, then create a custom connector. The portal shows the exact steps for whichever assistant you pick.

What you can ask it

Once you are connected, you can type requests the way you would say them out loud.

Pull and analyze comps

"Pull the comps for 1125 Woodrow and tell me whether it is priced right."

The assistant builds the comp set the way Market Tool would: it finds like-for-like listings near the address and pulls the median rent, the price range, days on market, and the supply-and-demand ratio. Then it reasons over that set instead of just handing you a number. It compares your asking rent to where similar homes are actually renting, flags whether you look over or underpriced, and reads the supply-and-demand ratio to tell you how much pricing power you have right now.

You can keep going in plain English. "Exclude the condos." "Only homes within a mile." "What would it take to lease in under 3 weeks?" Each follow-up re-runs against the same set, so you land on a defensible number.

Read your leasing activity

"Summarize the showing feedback for this unit and suggest what to change."

The assistant pulls every completed showing on the unit and reads the feedback your prospects left: what they liked, what they disliked, and any maintenance they flagged. It groups the recurring themes and turns them into a short list.

"Pull all the messages from the last 3 days and give me the most interesting ones."

Rather than scrolling every thread, you get the assistant's read on where your attention is worth spending. It scans inbound and outbound messages across your prospects and surfaces a summary.

AI can scan inbound/outbound messages and flag any that need your attention.

"Who was the last person to visit this address?"

The assistant checks the showing history for the property and names the most recent visitor and when they came through.

Run showings and access

"Schedule a showing at this unit on Thursday at 4 p.m. with Alex."

The assistant books the showing at the time and agent you name and runs your normal confirmation flow, so the prospect gets messaged the same way they would if you booked it via the Command Center.

"Change the showing agent at this property."

It reassigns the agent on the showing without you opening the calendar.

"Install a lockbox at this unit." and "Generate a lockbox code for this property."

It links the device to the unit or returns a working code, ready to text to whoever needs access.

"Put this unit on hold."

It flips the unit status for you, and can set it back to available when you need.

Screen and review applicants

"Analyze the income for this applicant."

The assistant reads the income the applicant shared through RentEngine Applications, whether that came from a connected payroll account, a linked bank, or uploaded paystubs. It gives you a summary of what was submitted: gross and net pay, how consistent the income looks, and whether it clears your rent-to-income rule.

"Does this application meet my requirements?"

It checks the application against your qualification criteria, including credit, criminal, eviction, and income, and tells you where the applicant passes and where they fall short.

"Why are prescreenings getting rejected at this property?"

It looks across recent prescreenings at the property and tells you the pattern behind the rejections, whether that is a budget mismatch, a failed qualification, or a fraud flag.

Add a prospect

"Create a prospect named Jordan Lee at this unit."

The assistant adds the lead against the right unit, sends your acknowledgement message, and starts the same new-prospect workflow, including team notifications and AI replies. Tell it to skip the text and it will hold the message if you have already reached out.

The MCP both reads your data and takes action, so it can answer a question one minute and handle the task the next. It works within your account's permissions, which means an AI assistant can only see and do what you can.
